Feeding a fussy veteran!

12th January 2010

Dornay Araminta, known as Minty, is a 29 year old Anglo Arab mare, belonging to Gill Gilson, a member of our sales team. Gill has owned Minty since she was a 4 yr old and they enjoy hacking and showing.

When Minty was ten, she broke her leg in the field and Gill thought she would lose her. However, after an operation to screw her leg back together and nine months box rest, she came back into ridden work and two years later she won in the show ring again. Minty gave Gill two beautiful foals before she was finally retired to the field at 20, where she babysits youngsters and keeps everyone else in tow.

Like many oldies, fibre is a problem for Minty as she does have problems chewing hay, this is further complicated by the fact that she is extremely fussy, she won’t even eat apples! Gill gets around this by giving her Badminton Easy Rider which is a fairly soft chop and it also has added biotin which helps keep her feet and coat looking good. She also gets Badminton High Fibre Complete in a decahedron which is another source of fibre and as both these feeds are very palatable she eats them with relish.

Keeping weight on Minty had been a problem in the past, but last winter Gill found she did really well on Badminton Veteran Mix, Speedi-Beet and Ultra Grass which gave her just the right amount of covering without being fat, and she came into Spring looking fabulous.

Due to her past injury (one of the screws goes through the pastern joint) Minty has more than the average veteran’s mobility problems. However, she has done really well on Badminton Ellastin supplement, which contains green lip mussel. Gill has had problems getting Minty to eat additives in the past but she loves this one.
